Repairing a fence is a cost efficient way to fix those areas that are showing signs of decay, rot or damage. Many times it is not necessary to replace the whole fence structure - which can come with a hefty price tag. And many of the repairs that you encounter will be fairly simple. How do you determine if your fence is a candidate for a simple repair?
Deciding on Repair or Replacement
Making the decision to repair or replace can be the easiest part of the project. Assess the variables like:
- How many fence posts are rotted?
- Are there insects or fungus growing on the fence structure?
- Is the fence leaning or lying on the ground?
- Are there any fence posts or rails that are not straight?
- Is there any facing material (pickets) that is rotted?

- Is the gate sagging? If yes, is it from bad hinges, wood rot or weight?
The Repair Option
If you only answered yes to one or two of the questions above, then you may want to consider repairing only the problem areas. After all, on the average, new fencing can cost around $15 or more per linear foot. That means the average size residential lot fence will cost around $3750, making fence replacement a costly choice. If you answered yes to a large percentage of these questions - say more than half - you are probably a candidate for a new fence.
